Challenge
Quaker Houghton is challenged with a shortage of labor and aims to improve the effectiveness of their field operations while maintaining a safe and reliable supply of bulk fluids to their end clients. Knowing the inventory in their end customer tanks is key to delivering timely and quality service. Like many chemical companies, Quaker Houghton had employees make routine trips to the tank to check the inventory. The major goals were reducing wasted trips, improving the visibility of the operation, and understanding what is happening at the tank when no one is present.

Physically traveling to the remote tank takes time. Having to climb the tank to check the inventory with a dipstick is an unnecessary risk and cost.

“We used to have Skybitz monitors, but when they broke, Skybitz would not send us new batteries to fix them. We chose TankScan because we wanted quick and reliable customer service”, said Joe, Site Engineer.

Solution
In 2023, Quaker Houghton installed the TankScan TSR Non-contact Radar tank monitoring system for a horizontal cylinder tank outside of Coshocton, OH. The remote monitoring system uses existing wireless cellular towers and a cloud software application which makes it easy and cost-effective to set up. The installation is straightforward and requires plugging in the battery and screwing the monitor into a 2” port on the top of the tank. The cloud application is set up remotely based on the information you provide and offers unlimited users, historical trending, and email/text notifications.

The tank levels can be viewed from your cell phone while standing near the tank or from a PC at a remote office. The system does not require software installation, no servers to setup, no routers, and no wires to run!

Results
With TankScan, Quaker Houghton now enjoys:
• Reduced labor associated with trips to the tank
• Improved reliability of their operations with remote tank level visibility
• Improved confidence in meeting customer needs with no runouts
• Easy data access to all interested parties with unlimited users

“The TankScan monitor provides our purchasing manager with the information they need and delivers consistent inventories for our clients”, said Joe, Site Engineer.
